It was a dark and stormy night…

Seriously. A tornado actually. I was on a field trip with the Navy Cadets. We fled to a building to avoid the storm (which was tearing up our tents), and there was single, beat up Space invaders game inside.

While the other cadets were content to play it, I wanted to know how it worked, so I could make my own.

I was in grade 7, and the year was 1980 – 41 years ago.

I signed up for a programming course at the college – and on the Commodore PET computers they had there, I saw a rather blocky version of Space invaders. I knew I was in the right place, and I never looked back.

Time passed, I earned a M.Sc. in Computer Science, and went to work for High Tech. And looked for opportunities to work on games.

That led to me doing some of the programming on a few published games:

These days, I teach game development at the local community college, and I’m still working on games.

I’m Dan Lingman, and I build stuff that goes Zap.
